East Timor is deep in crisis and they're in need of help. I'm glad to hear that East Timor has requested assistance from Malaysia and even happier to know that Malaysia is responding to the request. My only regret is that Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) has neither been proactive nor responsive to the conflict. What's more embarassing is to see Australia leading the expedition instead of ASEAN (tag).assistance

well IMHO it really doesn't matter, as long as the issue is resolved. Geographical boundaries be damned

_earth - an excellent idea
Where is ASEAN in this collapse?

ASEAN is probably hiding behind our "non-interference" policy.

What about re-establishing SEATO and giving it some teeth this time? One good thing is that depending on how it's structured, it may be easier to include Australia, New Zealand, the UK, US, etc. in Southeast Asian activities. (ASEAN is clearly for Southeast Asian nations only, as stated by its name; SEATO isn't as specific, however.)

I'd prefer an exclusively ASEAN body. I'd really hate to see ASEAN influenced anybody, be it the US, or China.
